Proposed route linking Enniscrone to Ballina will boost tourism and encourage mobility

Mayo and Sligo County Council are working together to identify an agreed preferred route on a proposed recreational trail between Ballina and Enniscrone.

The two local authorities jointly received LEADER Cooperation funding to complete a feasibility study on a recreational trail linking Ballina to Enniscrone, which would cross the border between the two counties.

Cllr Mark Duffy asked for an update in relation to the proposed project at last week’s meeting of the Ballina Municipal District.

In response, Head of the MD Declan Turnbull said that the study was carried out by Outdoor Recreation Northern Ireland and included a desk top study, local investigations, meetings with landowners and stakeholders.

Nine different potential routes were identified and once an agreement is reached on the preferred route, both Council’s will seek funding to develop the route in consultation with any landowners who are involved.

Cllr Duffy welcomed this update and said this project has great potential for tourism in the region as a whole.

“Any cycle link between Ballina and its surrounding towns would be very welcome from a mobility point of view but also from a tourism point of view,” he said.

Cllr Michael Loftus said this project would enhance other tourism projects around the north Mayo area.

“It is a great idea to link up Enniscrone and Ballina. This type of project would be a good thing and could enhance other projects, such as the Killala Ship 2 Reef project that we are awaiting, hopefully good news on,” he said.
