Progress welcomed on Ballyhaunis project

Crash barrier location in Ballyhaunis.

Consulting engineers have been appointed to undertake upgrade works on a long-awaited crash barrier and footpath under the bridge in Ballyhaunis, writes Paul O'Malley.

Fine Gael Cllr Alma Gallagher said the upgrade was essential to prioritise the health and safety of pupils at the nearby Scoil Iosa, as well as the vast number of pedestrians and vehicles navigating what she described as a 'blackspot' within the town.

“There are over 315 pupils at Scoil Iosa and over 60% of our local population walk to work, many of them past this location,” she told last week’s meeting of the Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District.

Cllr Gallagher welcomed the news that the consulting firm RPS Ltd had been appointed to the project by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

Area engineer Conrad Harley said RPS would develop a design for consultation between Claremorris-Swinford MD and Irish Rail. He added that the construction date will be between first and second quarter of next year.

Aontú Cllr Paul Lawless seconded the motion and said it was good to see a time-frame for the project in the engineer’s reply.

He suggested that a public lighting scheme should be considered for the Station Rise area of the town to further improve pedestrian safety in Ballyhaunis.
