Praise for Garda who jumped into river

A Garda have been commended for his valiant attempts to save a man who jumped into the River Moy.
A Mayo Garda risked his life in order to try and save a man who jumped into the River Moy.
The brave Garda was unable to save the man who plunged into the river on Wednesday morning and drowned.
Supt Alan Brady told a meeting of the Mayo Joint Policing Committee that such acts of bravery sometimes go unnoticed or unheralded.
He said the Garda jumped into the Moy despite the strong currents in an effort to rescue the man who had decided to take his own life.
“This guard made heroic attempts to save him but unfortunately the man passed away and was drowned. My sympathies go to the man’s family.
“This is something we sometimes don’t see or hear about but it’s something Guards do on a regular basis,” said the Ballina-based Supt.
Cllr Michael Loftus, of the Grainne Uaile Sub Aqua Club, was involved in the search operation for the man and praised the efforts of the Guard who dived into the river.
“I want to commend that young Guard,” said Cllr Loftus.
He said the Garda thought little for his own safety when he jumped in after the man.
“To jump into the river in full uniform in steel-toe boots and to risk your own life in an attempt to save someone else, he deserves an awful of praise.".
