'Positive' talks over future of busy Ballina facility

Meetings between Ballina Municipal District officials, the Cathaoirleach and the main users of the Ballina Athletic Track have been described as 'productive'.

Head of the district Declan Turnbull gave an update at last week's municipal district meeting on recent discussions with Ballina Athletic Club, Moy Valley Athletic Club and Ballina Cricket Club.

Mr Turnbull described the talks as 'very positive' and said further discussions around upgrades to the track are expected in the coming weeks. It is also intended to put a management committee in place for the facility at Belleek.

Cathaoirleach Jarlath Munnelly, who also attended the meeting, said it was great to see all clubs on the same page about the facility.

“The clubs involved are on the same page going forward. Money will have to be spent on this track in the coming years and it is important we as councillors put our money where our mouth is,” he said.

Cllr Michael Loftus said he hoped to see a Sports Capital grant approved for this important facility within the local community.

“The track is used day and night, there is something going on there at every hour of the day,” he said. “The surface does need an upgrade and getting a management committee in place is so crucial.”
