Positive news expected on housing

Positive news is expected soon on an affordable housing scheme for Castlebar.

Positive news is expected on an Affordable Housing project for Castlebar in the coming weeks.

There has been frustration over the lack of action by the Department of Housing on an application for 15 homes in Castlebar made by Mayo County Council.

However, Director of Services Tom Gilligan, and Fine Gael Cllr Cyril Burke told a meeting of the local authority that there is potentially good news on the horizon.

Cllr Burke said the delivery of the homes is a top priority and high on the agenda for Minister Alan Dillon.

“I think there will be a favourable response very soon,” he stated.

The first affordable housing development in Mayo was recently approved in principle.

Five homes contained within a 50-home development in Westport are to be designated as affordable housing.

It is not yet known what the asking price for the properties, located in a development on Golf Course Road, will be.

Mayo was previously left off a list of counties approved for affordable housing schemes with the local authority having to battle to be added to the Housing for All initiative.
