Plea for rental properties for pyrite riddled homeowners

An urgent plea has been issued for rental properties in the Westport area as homeowners are forced to demolish and rebuild their homes due to the presence of pyrite.

A Mayo councillor has issued an urgent appeal for rental properties for pyrite impacted homeowners.

Westport councillor Brendan Mulroy has made the plea seeking numerous properties in the Westport areas for householders.

A number of homes in the Westport area are set to be demolished soon due to the presence of pyrite. The first demolition took place in an estate in the town recently.

Cllr Mulroy said these impacted homeowners need a place to live while the rebuild of their properties takes place.

“If anyone out there has a house to rent in the general Westport area will they please contact me on (087) 9820542 or PM me," said the councillor on social media.

“I am looking for numerous properties for rental. The houses are for residents who are looking for accommodation while a rebuild is going on due to pyrite in their previous buildings which have to be demolished," he added.

There are currently 65 properties to rent in the entire county and just 14 in Westport and its surrounding areas. Westport also commands some of the highest rental costs in the county. Homeowners who have tested positive for pyrite are entitled to up €420,000 in redress, depending on the extent of the work required to rebuild the house.
