Mayo County Council has given approval to turn a former family home into a new residential care facility.

The local authority has given the green light for the project at Garryduff Park in Castlebar.

The development reflects broader efforts to enhance local healthcare infrastructure and support individuals with disabilities in the region.

The new facility is designed for Communicare Healthcare Limited, a Mayo-based company that provides care for people with disabilities and assists with independent living in the community.

The new building is described as a “state-of-the-art” facility designed to cater to members of the community with disabilities.

Designed by Castlebar-based company Masterson Design Limited, the building will be approximately 555 square metres in size and two-storeys high.

The development will include six ensuite bedrooms, a staff bedroom, common living areas, and shared spaces aimed at supporting independent living and community integration.

The new building will have seven car parking spaces and a garden space to the back.

The planning involves permission to demolish a pre-existing dwelling with attic accommodation, and an onsite garage and storage shed. This dwelling is currently vacant.

There was one objection to the project, citing concerns about increased traffic congestion and insufficient parking as well as the potential for the facility's commercial use to negatively impact the area's residential character.
