Plan mooted to deal with traffic congestion in Ballina

A proposed link route from the Crossmolina Road to the Killala Road in Ballina will not be advanced this year due to resources being tied up elsewhere.

However, once current commitments in Mayo Co Council's Roads Design Office have been dealt with, a preliminary appraisal for the proposed scheme can be undertaken and submitted to the Department of Transport.

The news was revealed at last week's Ballina Municipal District meeting after Independent Cllr Mark Duffy put forward a notice of motion calling on the council to begin work on designs and proposals for the link road.

Cllr Duffy said this proposed road would connect with the proposed Ballina bypass from the Foxford Road to the Crossmolina Road, meaning that all vehicles travelling towards Killala, Ballycastle and Coca-Cola would bypass Parkside and estates on the Killala Road. He added that these areas are suffering from "intensive" car movements currently.

“They would be relieved from traffic congestion. We could develop bike paths and other infrastructure."

Cllr Duffy called for the council to write to the Minister for Transport about this, a move that was supported by colleagues.
