Over 120 patients on trolleys at MUH and in west

There were 20 patients on trolleys at Mayo University Hospital this morning and 122 waiting for a bed at the four hospitals in the west

More than 120 people are on trolleys at Mayo University Hospital and the three other hospitals in the western region today.

The figures released by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) found 20 were awaiting a bed at MUH.

A breakdown of the patients found seven people were in the emergency department of the Castlebar facility while 13 patients were elsewhere in the hospital.

There were 122 patients languishing on trolleys and chairs at the four hospitals in the west this morning.

University Hospital Galway was the third most overcrowded hospital in the country this morning with 72 patients on trolleys and 55 of those in the emergency department.

At Sligo University Hospital there were 20 patients awaiting a bed and 12 of those were in the emergency department with eight elsewhere in the facility.

Meanwhile at Portiuncula Hospital in county Galway there were 10 patients on trolleys and chairs with two of those in the emergency department.

Nationally, 646 admitted patients are waiting for beds this morning, according to today’s INMO Trolley Watch figures.

University Hospital Limerick was the most overcrowded hospital in the country with 94 patients on trolleys and chairs, while Cork University Hospital was the second worst performing facility in the country with 73 patients on trolleys.
