Tributes to popular Swinford shopkeeper Jimmy Lavin

Jimmy Lavin

There’s sadness in Swinford this week following the death of highly-regarded businessman and “gentleman” Jimmy Lavin, writes Trevor Quinn.

The popular retailer passed away peacefully at Mayo University Hospital on Tuesday, September 12.

Jimmy established Lavin’s Drapery shop on Market Street in 1960 and ran it for decades with his late wife Kathleen (nee McNicholas) who predeceased him in 2012.

Jimmy, aged 94, who was formerly of Branchfield, Ballymote, was known for his warm and engaging nature.

Son Tom described his dad as being “strong, supportive and an encouraging gentleman” who was funny and witty at times.

“My dad always said whether customers buy or not, saying hello and goodbye costs you nothing,” he added.

Tom, who now runs the business with his wife Diane, said his dad never really retired and up until recently he could do everything. “As regards the business, the name goes far and wide and when you go to a country house and you say Jimmy Lavin or Kathleen Lavin everybody has a memory, the man with the smile,” he added.

Jimmy is survived by his sons and daughter Anthony, Mary Daly, and Tom, sister Margaret Porter (Ballymote), daughters-in-law Tina and Diane, son-in-law Mike Daly, six grandchildren and extended family.

His funeral Mass took place in Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Swinford on Saturday.
