Mayo mourns passing of respected businessman

The late John Hanley was a hugely respected and popular businessman in Castlebar.
One of Mayo’s best-known and most respected businessmen has passed away.
John Hanley, of Station Road, Castlebar, was laid to rest yesterday (Monday).
Prior to his retirement, Mr Hanley operated a number of retail stores in the county town. He ran a newsagents at the Mall, another outlet which boasted a hugely popular toy shop at Market Square, and established a successful supermarket close to his home at Station Road.
Generations of Castlebar people have fond memories of Hanley's shops with the toy store a particularly special place at Christmas time.
Mr Hanley was a founding member of the Convenience Stores and Newsagents Association.
A talented athlete in his youth, Mr Hanley was an ardent Mayo GAA and Castlebar Mitchels supporter. He was also a leading member of Castlebar Golf Club.
Many warm tributes were paid to the late Mr Hanley on social media. He was described as a ‘true gentleman' and a great person and kind employer.
"His kindness, friendliness and compassion were always to the fore," stated another.
"John was a loyal supporter of Castlebar Mitchels and Mayo GAA. He sponsored many teams and tournaments within the club over the years," said Castlebar Mitchels following the news of his passing.
Former Mayo GAA boss John O'Mahony also paid tribute to Mr Hanley, noting that he was one of the county's most loyal supporters.
Predeceased by his parents Charlie and Nelly Hanley, John is deeply regretted by his heartbroken wife Attracta, sons Cathal, Padraic, John and Colm, daughters-in-law Deirdre, Maeve, Orlaith and Collette, his adored grandchildren Matthew, Ben, Luke and Pippa-Rose, brother-in-law Padraic, sister-in-law Marian, cousins, relatives, neighbours and friends, to whom sympathy is extended.
Requiem Mass took place at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar yesterday with burial afterwards in the New Cemetery.
