St Stephens Day sees the return to Ballina of the Big Christmas Charity Paddle after a short hiatus.
This event has always been well supported and in 2021 saw approximately 100 individuals take to the River Moy at the Quay in Ballina on every type of craft, from kayaks, rowing boats, stand-up paddleboards, row boats and motor boats. This year participants will be joined by Ballina’s newest water-based club, the Ballina Dragons.
The event, commencing at 2pm, is a social gathering and aims to raise vital funds for Mayo Roscommon Hospice. It offers an opportunity for all the water-based club members to get together, as well as anyone who wants to join in the fun, get out of the house, catch up with friends and family and enjoy the fun and spectacle.
The flotilla makes its way up towards The Point at Riverslade with people having donned Santa hats, tinsel and Christmas lights.
David Horkan and Jackie Mehigan, who are organising the event, said: "It is an incredible sight for all, guests at the Ice House, residents of the Quay and those enjoying a walk in Belleek Woods or playing a game at Ballina FC. It’s not an everyday sight, and upon returning to the Quay, Gaye and John Keane of Keane's Pub are ready to warm everyone up with mulled wine and mince pies. Its such a wonderful and unusual way to spend a few hours over the Christmas Holidays."
David has set up an idonate page with a recommended donation of €15 per adult and €10 for kids. You will be automatically entered into a raffle with lots of water sports prizes to be won from I-Canoe and the Canoe Centre and all monies raised on the day will go directly to Mayo Roscommon Hospice.
