The long-running chaos caused by inadequate traffic lights in Ballina appears to be nearing an end.

Mayo County Council Chief Executive, Kevin Kelly confirmed to councillors at the monthly meeting of the local authority that the tender for the new MOVA Traffic Signals at Bunree and The Font has been awarded.

The contractor will be in site in the coming weeks with the lights expected to be operational by the end of this month or the beginning of October.

The confirmation came after councillors expressed their displeasure with the traffic nightmare in the town.

Cllr Mark Duffy said it is an “embarrassment” that the issue has dragged on so long. He said the town is “choked” with daily tailbacks.

Cllr John O’Hara said the situation is a “disgrace.” Cllr Annie May Reape said the misfiring traffic lights have been causing unprecedented problems. She said during a recent weekend, the tailbacks stretched from Bunree bridge to the turn off for Enniscrone.

“I never saw anything like it. It’s unbearable at the moment,” Cllr Reape commented.
