New defibrillator proposed for key Ballina location

Councillors in the Ballina Municipal District will lend their support to calls for a defibrillator to be installed in the new Market Square development in the town.

Cllr Mark Duffy raised this item as a motion at last week's meeting of the municipal council and was supported unanimously by his fellow councillors. Cllr John O'Hara said this was an important installation for everybody in the town.

"I'm supporting this as we all might need it at some point, this is to facilitate us all," he said.

However, he disagreed with the suggestion of Director of Services Catherine McConnell that the new installation be solar-powered.

"The council should facilitate this. Market Square is the wrong place for solar power where we have the services built in to power this device," he said.

Cllr Duffy said either option would suffice as long as it was delivered.

"I don't care how it's done as long as we do whatever we can to get it done," he said.
