N17 reopens following yesterday's tragedy

The N17 at Castlegar, Claremorris has reopened to traffic this afternoon following yesterday's tragic road traffic collision.

The N17 at Castlegar, Claremorris has reopened to traffic this afternoon following yesterday's tragic road traffic collision.

The collision, between a car and a lorry, occurred just after lunchtime at approximately 2pm yesterday afternoon on the main Galway to Sligo route.

All three in people in the car, a woman and two girls, died at the scene. It is believed they were from the west Galway area.

No other injuries reported.

Their bodies were removed from the scene and were taken to Mayo University Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

The road had been closed overnight in both directions and local diversions were in place facilitate a technical investigation into the cause of the collision.

Gardaí in Claremorris say the road has reopened to traffic.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
