Moving tributes at funeral of young Mayo man who died in road crash

The late James McNeive.
A young Mayo man who lost his life in a tragic road accident was laid to rest today.
There were moving tributes at the funeral of 28-year old James McNeive this morning.
The teacher and talented footballer from Churchfield, Knock, was fatally injured after the car he was driving was involved in a collision with a lorry near Drumcliffe, Co Sligo last Sunday morning.
James will be greatly missed by heartbroken mother Bernadette; his sister Fiona and her husband Barry; brothers Michael, Matthew and Peter jnr.; girlfriend Catherine Carr; his nieces Beth, Sally and Jane and his nephew Noah; aunts Mary, Noreen, Trish and Kate Sweeney; Patricia, Noreca and Monnie McNeive; uncles Pat, Michael, Sean and Kevin Sweeney, Joe Egan and John McNeive; his beloved cousins, extended Sweeney and McNeive family; his team-mates, neighbours and many friends.
Mourners packed the Church of St John the Baptist, Knock.
At the altar were symbols of James’ life including his guitar, GAA jerseys, a copy book, and family photographs.
Fr Richard Gibbons said it has been a “long, sad week,” for James’ loved ones.
He said the tragedy has left the parish “almost bereft.” Fr Richard Gibbons told mourners that James “died far too young, far too soon” but his short life was full of achievements. James was a talented footballer who played with Aghamore, a gifted musician, and a dedicated and inspirational teacher.
“He has left us with a store of memories to treasure,” said Fr Gibbons.
James’ brother Michael delivered a moving eulogy.
He said James “spread fun, joy, and laughter” through his whole life.
“You could fill 100 eulogies with the reasons James was such a wonderful person,” said Michael.
“James loved fun. No matter the adversity he faced, or the kind of day he had, James always found a way to make himself and those around him smile and laugh,” his brother added.
The family thanked those who offered support at this difficult time and Michael paid special tribute to James’ girlfriend Catherine.
“Thank you for filling the last three years of his life with love,” said Michael.
“You made him so happy, and it is a great comfort to us that the last few days of his life were spent enjoying your company. The last familiar face he saw before his passing was the woman he loved.”
