Some motorists have faced lengthy delays due to road resurfacing on the N5 between Knockatemple and Bohola.
A number of motorists have complained about being held up for more than 45 minutes on the road due to tailbacks.
The project, which is being completed along a 5km stretch, is expected to take three to four weeks.
A traffic light system is in place with one lane of traffic open to motorists.
A statement issued by Mayo County Council stated: “The contractor is examining alternative measures to alleviate the congestion.
“Eastbound motorists are asked to use the N58 and then on to the R321 as an alternative route.”
There has been lots of discussion around improvement works to the N5 in recent months.
In September, the coroner for Mayo Pat O’Connor insisted urgent work should be carried out on what he described as a ‘notorious’ three-kilometre stretch near Swinford.
