Minister of State Dara Calleary has paid a glowing tribute to Western People photographer Henry Wills, who passed away yesterday evening after a brief illness.

"I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Henry Wills - a great friend.

"Henry was one of Ireland's master photographers - his craft enlivening and emboldening his beloved Western People every week and regularly featuring in national and international publications.

"He captured the big moments, the personal moments, the community moments, the celebration moments, the tragic moments, the political moments, the sporting moments - all aspects of life were Henry's canvas.

"Those moments combined with his talent made for an amazing tapestry of life and story, much of which was celebrated in his recent book In All Kinds of Weather. But for Henry the important part of each of those moments was the person or the people who were at the centre of it. They came first every time.

"As well as capturing moments, he made them happen. He was involved in basketball, drama, the Ballina Salmon Festival, choirs, youth activities - he believed in community and believed in enabling community.

"Only a few short weeks ago we gathered to celebrate the launch of his great book. Hundreds gathered to celebrate the talent but most importantly the person of Henry. The fun and joy of the night reflected the person who we were celebrating.

"I wish to extend my sincerest sympathies to Henry's sister Mary and her family, to all of his Western People family past and present and to his many friends across the country.

"Ni bheidh a leithéid arís ann.

"May Henry rest in peace.
