Memorial wall faces demolition threat

The Mayo Peace Park memorial wall is under threat from subsidence issues.
Access will have to restricted to the Mayo Peace Park Wall with demolishing and rebuilding the structure the likely outcome due to subsidence issues.
Engineers recently carried out a study of the subsidence issues that have dogged the memorial wall in Castlebar. They have recommended restricting access and have informed Mayo County Council that this is due to the risk of granite slabs coming away from the main structure.
"The emerging long-term solution is to demolish and rebuild the wall.
"Given that, the interim measures of restricting assess around the wall could be in place until a funding source is secured for the long-term solution.
"We are seeking funding for a fencing resolution that would not detract too much from the amenity.
"Failing this, we may be looking at surrounding the wall with palisade fencing,” stated a Mayo County Council spokesperson. It is understood that demolishing and rebuilding the wall will be a costly exercise.
