New Bishop of Killala installed this afternoon
New Bishop of Killala, Archbishop Francis Duffy. He is also the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Tuam since November 2021 and his appointment to Killala has resulted in the two dioceses being united in persona episcopi (in the person of the bishop).
The 50th ever Bishop of Killala was installed at a ceremony at St Muredach’s Cathedral this afternoon.
Cavan native Archbishop Francis Duffy will now lead the Diocese of Killala as Bishop having been Apostolic Administrator of the diocese prior to his appointment to the role of Bishop by Pope Leo XIV in February of this year.
As he has been the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Tuam since November 2021, his appointment to Killala has resulted in the two dioceses being united in persona episcopi (in the person of the bishop).
The installation ceremony began at 3pm today at the Cathedral. The new Bishop was greeted at the door of the Cathedral by his predecessor Bishop Emeritus of Killala John Fleming, Fr Aidan O’Boyle, moderator for the Parish of Kilmoremoy and Fr Michael Gilroy, chairperson of the College of Consultors.
The Apostolic Letter of Appointment written by Pope Leo XIV in February of this year, appointing the Archbishop to Killala, was read by Fr Gilroy.

Following his Installation, Archbishop Duffy led the liturgy as Chief Celebrant and delivered his first homily as the new Bishop of Killala.
His homily focused heavily on the present and future of the Killala diocese but began with an honest acknowledgement of darker elements of the Church’s past.
“Many young people suffered, and years later, continue to suffer the effects of abuse perpetrated by clergy,” he said.
“We are grateful for those who spoke out about their terrible experiences, for the service of the media, for those who help bring healing and peace, and all those who now make our parishes safer places.”
Archbishop Duffy said the Archdiocese of Tuam and the Diocese of Killala are moving towards 'union'.
“Since April 2024, this Diocese of Killala and the Archdiocese of Tuam have been on a journey towards greater cooperation and towards union.”
“We are living at a moment of opportunity. Structures and practices may change, but the mission remains constant: to proclaim the Good News of the risen Lord.”

A native of Bawnboy, Co Cavan, Archbishop Duffy was ordained in June 1982. He was appointed as Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois in July 2013 by Pope Francis.
He was installed as Archbishop of Tuam in January 2022 following his appointment by Pope Francis and two years later was appointed as Apostolic Administrator of Killala by Pope Leo.
