Melissa is a trailblazer for women in business

Melissa Walsh founded her successful business when she was just 23.
Claremorris-based businesswoman Melissa Walsh has once again made her mark as a finalist in this year’s Network Ireland Mayo Business Woman of the Year Awards. It is a well-earned recognition of her two decades of entrepreneurial leadership, design innovation, and community involvement.
Melissa is managing director of MW Design, Print & Signs Ltd, a business she founded in 2003 at the age of just 23. What began as a freelance design service in her bedroom has grown into a multi-award-winning company offering bespoke print and signage solutions to clients across Ireland. Based in a modern facility in Lakeside Retail Park, Claremorris, the company is known for its high-quality production, customer-focused approach, and emphasis on using the latest technology to deliver innovative results.
“All my life I’ve been motivated, self-driven and enthusiastic about learning and developing new skills to grow my business,” Melissa told the
.That dedication is evident in both her business and academic achievements. She holds a BA Honours Degree in Graphic, Product and Interactive Design from the University of Ulster, an MSc in Business Leadership Development from the University of Galway, and is currently pursuing an MSc in Design Innovation at Maynooth University.
Melissa’s forward-thinking approach has helped MW Design, Print & Signs thrive during times of great economic uncertainty. From navigating the 2008 financial crisis to weathering the Covid-19 pandemic, Melissa’s commitment to investing in her team, adopting sustainable practices, and maintaining strong financial oversight has ensured the company’s continued success with annual sales increases of up to 21% in recent years.
Her work in the STEM sector, particularly in the male-dominated field of sign production and manufacturing, makes her a strong advocate for women in business. She is currently President of the Claremorris and District Lions Club - an organisation that until recently was male-only - and sits on the board of directors for the local credit union where she brings fresh leadership and insight.
Melissa has also contributed to education and professional development, lecturing at schools and universities on entrepreneurship and innovation. Her story as a single mother of three daughters, running a business, studying part-time, and leading community organisations make her an inspirational role model for women balancing career and family.
Network Ireland Mayo has played a key role in Melissa’s journey over the past few years, offering support, mentorship, and opportunities to collaborate with other women in business.
“The support from Network Ireland has been invaluable,” she said. “It has helped me build my leadership skills, grow my network, and continue developing both personally and professionally.”
With an impressive list of accolades including multiple Irish Print Awards and Network Ireland titles, Melissa Walsh continues to push boundaries. Her future plans include expanding her business further, embracing technological innovation, and remaining committed to sustainable growth.
In a world where creativity and resilience are more important than ever, Melissa’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, innovation, and community support. As the Business Woman of the Year Awards approach, she stands as a deserving finalist and a true ambassador for women in business in the west of Ireland.
