Medical centre plan for Mayo village

Medical centre plan for Mayo village

Cllr Harry Barrett raised the issue.

Castlebar councillors are backing proposals to build a new medical centre in Lahardane.

Cllr Harry Barrett highlighted the community’s ambitions at a meeting of Castlebar Municipal District, noting it is among the main goals of a community action plan drawn up in Lahardane.

“Developing a medical centre is the first major ask in this plan," he said, adding that the community has put forward a comprehensive plan which would allow the local GP and a second doctor to move to a building in the centre of the village. The proposal also includes a pharmacy.

“The site is ready to go. The ask is that we provide a permanent and appropriate medical facility for this growing area."

He said it would transform a prominent derelict site in the village. Cllr Barrett said he believes Minister Dara Calleary is behind the community on the project.

“It will be getting my full support and it’s something I want to see happening,” said the Independent councillor. “It will be a major benefit to the people of Lahardane,” he added.

Cllr Michael Kilcoyne advised the local community to discuss their proposals with the HSE Estates department.

“They are the people who develop the medical centres,” he stated.
