Mayo's first ever dog park is officially opened

Minister Dara Calleary opened Mayo's first dog park at Lough Lannagh in Castlebar on Friday  last.

There was plenty of paw-sitivity as Mayo’s first ever dog park was officially opened.

The facility at Lough Lannagh in Castlebar is only the second of its kind in Ireland.

Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht Dara Calleary opened the new park last Friday, June 12.

The purpose-built facility, which was awarded €100,000 in funding under the Community Recognition Fund (CRF), will provide a safe, enclosed space for dogs to exercise and socialise, while offering a welcoming environment for pet owners and families.

“The amenities here in Lough Lannagh are first class and I am delighted to be here to officially open them to the public.

“I know the Dog Park and further enhancements that have taken place will be a valuable addition to the area. These works will complement other facilities in Castlebar, many of which are also funded by my Department and will be a welcome addition to the existing community spaces,” said Minister Calleary.

“Two-legged and four-legged friends are going to absolutely love this place,” he added.

The project was the brainchild of local councillor Donna Sheridan and Minister Calleary heaped praise on her vision and determination.

“A special well done to Donna for pioneering and pushing it through,” said Minister Calleary.

He said the completed facility is a testament to her dedication and will be a hugely important amenity for dog owners from Castlebar and all over the county.

“Donna take a bow. There can be a lot of very cheap criticism of politicians and public representatives about impact but our councillors across all parties and groups make an impact. This is Donna making a very substantial impact,” said the Ballina TD.

The project is part of an overall masterplan for Lough Lannagh.

“Every town needs wide and open spaces, for leisure, for health, for community activities, for visitors, and for tourism. Lough Lannagh is going to hit all those bases,” said Minister Calleary.
