Mayo woman completes Camino cycle for charity

Edel Gallagher has just completed the Camino cycle.
Ballina's Edel Gallagher and her group of cyclists have just returned from Spain where they have completed the famous French Camino Way for CRITICAL Emergency Medical Response charity cycle. This was a fantastic week of cycling which included urban and rural trails.
The rural trails was mostly on the Euro Velo cycle route 3, which is the pilgrim route that follows the famous Camino and is one of many dedicated euro Velo cycle routes around Europe. The routes are funded by the EU and encourage sustainable tourism with signposted cycling routes that avoid busy roads insofar as is possible.
"Anyone can cycle these routes or do part of them," says Edel. "In fact, we are privileged in the West of Ireland as the Euro Velo route 1, which is the wild Atlantic Way route that passes through the Ox mountains, through breathtaking scenery via Enniscrone up through the Quay into Ballina and then continuing along the Amazing Coast (WAW)."
Watch out for the bicycle signs with a bike and ‘1’ surrounded by a circle of stars.
Edel welcomes the inclusion of cycling facilities as part of transport infrastructure in the recent planning bill that has been passed in the Dáil. Cycling was one of the last specific amendments considered that concerned the inclusion of cycling infrastructure as transport infrastructure.
Edel is an active member of Ballina Cycling Club and Cycling Ireland Leisure Commission and she encourages everyone to get out on their bikes at whatever level they are at. Cycling clubs are there to support new members.
