Mayo village finally gets clean water supply

500 households in Murrisk, Lecanvey and Kilsallagh are set to be connected to a new water scheme by year's end.

The new Murrisk Community Water Scheme has been hailed by a local councillor as "the best news for West Mayo in many years".

Independent Cllr Christy Hyland welcomed the news that 500 residences in the Murrisk, Kilsallagh and Lecanvey areas are to be connected to the new scheme by the end of this year with works due to commence this month.

“I want to compliment the community in these areas. This is a real game-changer for them as well as one of the best infrastructure we’ve ever brought in and the best news for West Mayo in many years,” he told last week's municipal district meeting.

However, Cllr Hyland added that these works have been overdue for two decades.

“This work should have been done about 20 years ago. The people have put up with brown water flowing out of their taps and the famous notice ‘water not fit for human consumption'.”

Cllr Peter Flynn praised the work of Michael McDermott and the rural water services team in Mayo County Council and Deputy Michael Ring for helping bring the scheme to fruition.

Head of the district Padraig Walsh said there is still time for residents to sign up for the scheme and urged them to contact the council.
