Mayo town to re-establish links with Ronald Reagan's home city
The city of Dixon in Illinois is reigniting twinning links with Castlebar.
Castlebar is seeking to re-establish its twinning arrangement with US city of Dixon in Illinois.
Head of Castlebar Municipal District, David Mellett, told councillors last week that there has been regular contact between the towns.
"They reached out to us in late 2023 looking to reignite the twinning, and you may remember that at our invitation they attended the Mayo Co Council event held in Chicago in December 2023. Since then, we have kept in touch, and they are also attending the Mayo Day festivities in Chicago next week.”
The Mayor of Dixon will be among a group travelling to Castlebar in May.
Dixon, with a population of over 15,000, was the boyhood home of former US President Ronald Reagan.
