Mayo tourist attraction will have to be demolished and rebuilt

The Mayo Peace Park in Castlebar has been a popular tourist attraction since it opened over a decade ago.
It could cost in the region of €200,000 to demolish and rebuild the Mayo Peace Park Wall after it was beset by subsidence issues.
An expert report has recommended that the only solution is to demolish and rebuild the Castlebar structure.
An updated report on the matter, issued by Castlebar Municipal District, set out how the contractor has been appointed to fabricate and erect the fencing solution around the Peace Park wall to ensure visitors to the site are kept a safe distance from the wall. This interim work is being funded from General Municipal Allocation (GMA), as agreed by elected members of the Castlebar Municipal District. The council expects works on the ground to get underway next month.
“The emerging long-term solution recommended by our appointed structural engineer consultant is to demolish the existing wall and rebuild it using modern construction techniques and materials. This approach offers the opportunity to address underlying structural and drainage issues comprehensively, ensuring the long-term stability and safety of the wall. This will require significant financial investment and we are looking to identify suitable sources of funding,” said Mayo County Council in a report to councillors.
The Mayo Peace Park committee has expressed concerns about the recent report and outlined their worries to local councillors. The committee fears the local authority is distancing itself from its involvement in the initial build.
The Peace Park has been a significant tourist attraction and honours the memories of those from Mayo who lost their lives in global conflicts.
