A new Castlebar Tidy Towns flower project has been dedicated to the memory of a hugely popular local businesswoman.

The Tidy Towns Committee has dedicated the Castle Street project to the late Maire Kelly Moore, who ran Kelly’s Hair & Beauty Salon.

We are honoured to dedicate our flower project on the Castle Street wall to her memory. A special thank you to her son Cian, daughter Amy, her brothers, John and Tom and mother Teresa,” said Castlebar Tidy Towns.

It has been a busy summer for the committee.

“We are deeply indebted to the businesses and staff in Market Square, Main Street, Springfield, Ellison Street, and the Car Park for watering and feeding the Flower containers, boxes and hanging baskets throughout the summer months during the dry spells,” added Castlebar Tidy Towns.

Adjudication has been taking place over the past number of weeks in the various Housing Estates as part of a competition organised by the the committee. Those short listed will be contacted during October.

The Committee received a €30,000 grant (from the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications through the offices of Mayo County Council) for a Foamstream machine to clean and maintain the town without herbicides. The foam used is 100% environmentally friendly and biodegradable, made from natural plant oils and sugar.

A poster colouring contest for primary school students in Castlebar will run from September to October, focusing on "Anti-Litter and Anti-Graffiti Awareness." Prizes will be awarded at a ceremony later in the year.

Tidy Towns hope to bring together the local community at an awards ceremony to be held in early November. This ceremony will recognise the work and efforts of those in the Housing Estates, Schools, Businesses / Shops together with the many individuals that contribute to our overall Tidy Towns campaign for the National competition.
