Mayo school shows how to build a value-for-money bike shed

Logboy National School, near Ballyhaunis, recently installed a bike shed at little more than one percent of the cost of the now notorious cycle shed for TDs, Senators and Oireachtas staff at Leinster House in Dublin.

The Logboy NS bike shed, which is of similar proportions to the one at Leinster House, cost a modest price of €4,000, a far cry from the €370,000 spent by the Office of Public Works on the one at Leinster House.

"The Green Schools travel program gave us the grant," explained Logboy NS school principal Karen Ronayne.

Ms Ronayne said the school had earlier participated in a bike-to-school travel programme run by An Taisce's Green Schools programme, making Logboy NS eligible to apply for grant aid for the bike shelter.

The principal added: "The bike/scooter shelter encourages more pupils to cycle or scoot to school. We find this works great from April to June when the weather improves. Surveys have shown the roads around the school to be safe to cycle. The pupils often meet at a point suitable to them all and cycle to school all together with high visibility waistcoats on."
