Mayo Road not "fit for modern traffic" inquest told

Aisling Moore and Abbigael Tournie Moore lost their lives in a road accident on the N26.

Serious concerns about a stretch of road where a mother and daughter lost their lives have been raised.

Mayo Coroner Pat O’Connor described a section of the N26 as “not fit for modern traffic” as he opened the inquest into the deaths of 46-year-old Aisling Moore and her eight-year-old daughter Abbigael Tournie Moore.

The mother and daughter from Cois na Coille, Kilkelly Road, Swinford, died on July 2 this year after their car was involved in a collision with a lorry on the N26 at Callow.

Mr O’Connor said he understands that family members share his concerns about this section of road.

"The local authority and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) will have to do something,” he commented.

He said an investigation of the entire stretch of road is required and new speed limits need to be introduced.

The Coroner said the deaths of Aisling and Abbigael left the local community “completely shocked.” Dr Tamas Nemeth Consultant, Pathologist at Mayo University Hospital told the inquest that the medical cause of death in Aisling's case was extensive fatal injuries including multiple fractures and head injuries.

The medical cause of Abbigael’s death was extensive head injuries.

Mr O'Connor told the family he was opening the inquest so that a State death certificate could be issued.

He said it would take some time before a full inquiry is carried out. Mr O’Connor adjourned the substantive inquest hearing pending the completion of a garda investigation.
