Mayo musician plays at funeral of Irish Olympic great

Eamonn Walsh from Ballina

Uilleann Piper Eamonn Walsh from Ballina played at the funeral of all-time great Olympic Gold Medalist Ronnie Delany today (Monday).

The former Olympic 1500m gold medal winner, a native of Dublin, died last Wednesday at the age of 91.

Delany topped the podium in Melbourne in 1956 and was a 1500m finalist four years later in Rome.

His funeral took place this morning in Dublin where Mr Walsh was part of the procession, playing the Uileann Pipes.

Eamonn is no stranger to playing at high profile funerals having played at the funerals of the Late Late show host Gay Byrne and his wife Kathleen Watkins, Christy Duignan of Aslan and Slane Castle owner Lord Henry Mount Charles.

Eamonn also played in the Dáil Chamber during the centenary of Seanad Èireann.
