A popular lollipop man from east Mayo is among the national finalists to be crowned the Tonstix Lollipop Person of the Year.
Thomas O’Brien is the lollipop person for St Attracta’s NS Charlestown. A true community favourite, he has been selected as the finalist for the Connacht region.
“Thomas is more than just a friendly face — he’s a constant source of care, dedication, and positivity. Always early, always smiling, and always making sure every child crosses safely — no matter the weather,” said the school on social media.
As one parent shared: “The children always listen to Thomas — he’s there long before they arrive and doesn’t leave until long after they’ve all gone home. He’s so deserving of this recognition.” From calm guidance at a busy crossing to cheerful greetings that brighten the day, Thomas truly embodies what it means to be a lollipop legend.
The winner of the Tonstix Lollipop Person of the Year title will receive a €1,000 holiday voucher.
