Mayo man is co-writer of Latvia's Eurovision entry

Ballina native Liam Geddes has co-written the Latvian song for the Eurovision 'Hollow' which will be performed by Dons

A native of Ballina has co-written the song that will represent Latvia at this year's Eurovision in Sweden.

Liam Geddes, a songwriter/producer from the north Mayo town, was one of the creative minds behind Hollow, which is performed by Dons and was selected by the Latvian public to be their country’s song for Eurovision 2024.

A chance meeting with Dons at a songwriting camp kickstarted their creative partnership, which expanded to include Kate Northrop.

“I was scheduled in a session with Dons from Latvia, it was pure chance," Liam told the Western People. "We just started talking about what we’d write about and Eurovision wasn’t in the discussion until after we had written it.

“People in Latvia were saying it would be really good to do this for Eurovision. It sounds very random but it was a very organic thing.”

Liam said Hollow was a song that had special meaning to him.

“We resonated with this idea of not loving the oppression people have had to face in terms of who they love and there are always people out there to tell you right and wrong, even if it doesn’t coexist with your own life. It resonated with all of us,” he said.

Liam will travel to Malmo with the Latvian crew in early May for the competition where they will compete against the Irish act, Bambie Thug, who have polarised the nation with their eclectic presentation and music. Liam said Bambie Thug is not necessarily his favourite type of music but he feels as though they were a good choice to represent Ireland.

“It is certainly interesting, a different direction to the sort of acts Ireland has ever chosen. It is not the music I would gravitate towards straight away in terms of my tastes but I think that’s a good thing. It is something totally fresh and if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work.”
