Mayo location was the sunniest in Ireland in March

Belmullet was the sunniest spot in Ireland in March.

There were a number of records and milestones recorded at Mayo weather stations in March.

Newport weather station saw the highest amount of rainfall in March of any weather station in Ireland. This was despite recording its driest March since 2013. The West Mayo weather station was the wettest station in the country last month as that nation experienced mild and dry weather.

According to Met Éireann’s March 2025 Climate Statement, Newport recorded 59mm of rain last month compared to a provisional nationwide average of 36.2 mm. Knock was among 13 weather stations across the county which recorded the warmest March since 2012. Knock reported the lowest average temperature in the country during March at 7.5°C, which was 1.7°C above its long-term average temperature.

Meanwhile, Erris was the sunniest spot in Ireland. Belmullet recorded the highest daily sunshine figure in the country, with 11.3 hours of sunshine recorded on Wednesday, March 19.

March was the eighth warmest on record since 1900 and the warmest since 2012. The national average temperature last month was 8.55°C, which is 1.42°C above the most recent 1991-2020 long-term average.
