Mayo Hospice invites community to open evening for new volunteers
The Volunteer Open Evening is an opportunity for others to explore how they, too, could become part of the Mayo Hospice community.
Mayo Hospice is inviting people across the local community to discover the difference volunteering can make at its Volunteer Open Evening on Thursday, 22nd October 2026, from 6.30pm to 8pm.
Taking place at Mayo Hospice in Knockaphunta, Castlebar, the evening will offer an opportunity for anyone interested in volunteering to meet members of the Hospice team, learn about the different ways to get involved and discover how giving even a little of their time can make a meaningful difference.
Volunteers play an important role in creating the warm and welcoming environment at Mayo Hospice, supporting patients, families and staff through a variety of roles, from welcoming visitors at reception to helping with day-to-day activities.
For Ann Marie Jordan, who has volunteered at Mayo Hospice for over four years, the experience has been particularly rewarding.
Ann Marie volunteers on reception once or twice a month, welcoming visitors, answering questions and offering a friendly face at what can sometimes be a difficult time. Reflecting on her experience, Ann Marie said: "I've become part of a truly beautiful and supportive community."
Her story highlights how even small gestures of kindness, a welcoming smile or a few hours of someone's time can have a lasting impact.
The Volunteer Open Evening is an opportunity for others to explore how they, too, could become part of the Mayo Hospice community.
Whether you have volunteered before, are looking to meet new people or simply want to give something back to your community, everyone interested in learning more is warmly invited to come along.
The Volunteer Open Evening takes place on Thursday, 22nd October 2026, from 6.30pm to 8pm at Mayo Hospice, Knockaphunta, Castlebar, Co. Mayo, F23 YY40. No registration needed.
