Mayo father makes heartfelt appeal to young people after death of his son

Matthew's father Sean appealed for young people to seek help if they are struggling at his son's funeral Mass.

Castlebar councillors have expressed their sympathy to the Mullahy family following the tragic loss of their son and sibling Matthew.

Castlebar was plunged into deep sadness following the death of Matthew last Saturday week. The former St Gerald’s College student had only completed his Leaving Cert last year. He had starred on the sporting fields for Castlebar Mitchels and Castlebar Celtic.

Speaking at his son’s funeral on Wednesday, Matthew’s father Sean appealed to young people to ask for help if they are struggling.

“Your first port of call, always, is to the ones who love you most, and that is your parents. And if, for any reason, you can’t articulate to them, you go to a trusted adult.

“We heard reference today to Pieta House, the Samaritans, The Family Centre, and Mayo Mental Health (Association). And if all of these fail, you come down and you knock on my door,” Mr Mullahy told mourners.

“We can’t comprehend the grief and the pain that is being brought on families,” said Cllr Michael Kilcoyne at a meeting of Castlebar Municipal District.

Cllr Blackie Gavin said Matthew’s untimely death caused "deep sadness" in Castlebar.

“It’s a terrible, terrible tragedy,” he stated. “Words cannot express the loss,” said Cllr Ger Deere.

Matthew is deeply regretted by his parents Sean and Grace, brother Conor, granny Ena, uncles, aunts, many cousins and large circle of friends
