The Government has been accused of ‘misleading’ the public following a €2.6 million announcement for rural roads in Mayo.

Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne made the comments at a meeting of Castlebar Municipal District.

“It’s misleading,” stated Cllr Kilcoyne, following the announcement, adding that half of the money will not be received until next year.

He also pointed out that the €300,000 allocation for Castlebar Municipal District for 2024 will be the same as last year.

“People out there feel every road and byroad is going to be done for them,” he said.

In reality, the funding is going to be “very modest", he claimed.

The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys, last week announced a record funding allocation of €40 million for repairs and improvement works on non-public rural roads and laneways under the Local Improvement Scheme (LIS).

The allocation for Mayo is €2,554,159, with a further €100,000 in place for island roads.
