Mayo Community Futures marked its 20th anniversary at a special celebration in Balla Community Resource Centre on October 17, bringing together community representatives, volunteers and stakeholders from across Mayo to recognise two decades of community-led planning and development.
Since its introduction in Mayo in 2006, Community Futures has empowered local communities to identify priorities, develop action plans and shape their own future. To date, 42 communities have completed the process, with many renewing and updating their plans to meet changing local needs.
The event featured a commemorative video highlighting the programme's impact across the county, with contributions from community representatives, development organisations and Mayo County Council.
Minister for Social Protection, Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, praised the programme's success, noting its continued relevance and strong community participation.
Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr John Caulfield, highlighted Mayo's unique position as the only county in Ireland to implement the Community Futures model on a county-wide basis and paid tribute to those whose vision helped establish the programme.
Council chief executive Kevin Kelly reaffirmed the local authority's commitment to supporting the initiative, recognising the dedication of community volunteers, local development companies, programme coordinators and the Mayo Community Futures Management Committee.
John Cannon, chairperson of the Mayo Community Futures Management Committee, welcomed guests and acknowledged the many individuals and organisations whose support has contributed to the programme's success over the past 20 years.
A special awards presentation honoured the individuals who played a key role in bringing Community Futures to Mayo, including Sr. Maureen Lally, the late Terry Gallagher and the late John Coll. Their leadership and commitment helped establish a programme that has strengthened communities across the county and continues to support local development today.
The anniversary celebration served as a fitting tribute to the thousands of volunteers, community groups and local leaders who have contributed to the success of Mayo Community Futures over the past two decades. Their collective efforts have helped build stronger, more resilient communities and will continue to shape the future of County Mayo for years to come.
