History was made when Glór na dTonn Céilí Band were crowned All-Ireland champions at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Wexford.
The band are the reigning Mayo and Connacht champions since 2022 and have had great success as both individual musicians and as a band since their formation in 2019. The band were delighted to bring the most coveted All Ireland title in traditional Irish music back to Connacht and Mayo.
The group strives to produce a lively Connacht style of dance music inspired by some of Connacht’s finest musicians such as the legendary James Morrison and Michael Coleman. The name 'Glór na dTonn' came about as the band members hail from Mayo, Sligo and Waterford. Anuas air sin, is logainm áitiúil an t-ainm 'Glór na dTonn' a chuaigh go mór i bhfeidhm ar an mbanna.
Glór na dTonn were representing CCÉ Scoil Acla in the competition. This is the first time in the history of the competition that Achill musicians have won the highly esteemed All-Ireland Senior Céilí Band title. It is fitting that 2025 marks the 40th anniversary of the revival of Scoil Acla. The band line-up features Séamus Tiernan, Marianna Tiernan, Kathryn Tiernan, Chloe McGrath and Alan Judge from County Mayo. Sligo musicians include Tom Gavin, Kate Gavin, Jason McGuinness and Conal McCormack, while Thomas Ahern hails from County Waterford.
This year's Fleadh Cheoil in Wexford was a tremendous success with an estimated 800,000 visiting the town over the course of the eight days. The event now moves to Belfast for 2026 and 2027 with hopes high that it may be hosted in Ballina in 2028 an 2029.
