Mayo butcher launches novel treasure hunt along greenway

Newport butcher Sean Kelly has launched a unique Putóg Hunt along the Great Western Greenway.
Master butcher Seán Kelly has hidden 20 Kelly’s Putógs on the Great Western Greenway and everyone who finds one will get a prize worth at least €200 from a €5,000 prize fund.
There’s no entry fee, all Greenway walkers, cyclists and runners are invited to keep an eye out for the elusive Putóg. Top prize is a mountain bike worth €750. The Kelly’s Putóg Hunt takes place from Monday to Saturday, August 19th to 24th, and the black, kidney shaped Putógs could be anywhere along the Greenway from Westport to Cashel on Achill Island. Keep an eye on social media for daily hints.
“This is Kelly’s Butchers way of saying thank you to all the Greenway users who have called into our shop and Kelly’s Kitchen in Newport over the years. We appreciate your business.”, says charismatic Seán Kelly. “Hop on your bike, lace up those walking shoes and get yourself, your friends and your family on the Kelly’s Putóg Hunt. One prize per Putóg so you have 20 chances!”
The Kelly’s Putógs will be nesting somewhere on the Greenway itself, there is no need to go off the track or beyond the fenceline. Each one has a unique identification number on it and a label with details of how to redeem the associated prize. Anyone who finds a Putóg should take it and the label with them and bring it to Kelly’s Butchers in Newport to get their prize.
The ‘Putóg’ is the traditional Irish black pudding which was made in every farmhouse in the West of Ireland. The filling was a combination of oatmeal, onions, suet, blood, salt and pepper and other easily sourced ingredients. Originally it was made in the time-honoured casing of a sheep’s stomach. Award-winning butchers, Kelly’s of Newport, are keeping tradition alive by producing the ‘Putóg’ in its original form. The word ‘Putóg’ actually translates from Irish as ‘gut’, or ‘belly’.
Kelly’s Butchers Shop and the Kelly’s Kitchen café next door are on the main street in charming Newport town right on the Greenway itself. Kelly’s would like to thank Mayo County Council for their support and all the businesses who have supported the Putóg Hunt by giving prizes and vouchers - Sheridan’s Centra Newport, An Port Mór, PortWest, The Helm, The Gráinne Uaile, Sweeneys SuperValu, Newport Pharmacy, Wyatt Hotel Westport, Bridge Inn Newport, Midwest Furniture, Nevin’s Newfield Inn, Corrib Oil, Mulranny Park Hotel, Hotel Newport, Óstan Oilean Acla, Doherty’s Mulranny, Hastings Insurance, Sabhna Saunas, Achill Tourism, O’Hara’s Bakery and Kenny Wines Galway.
