Mayo artist died in drowning tragedy, inquest hears

A woman who “touched the lives of many” died in a drowning accident, an inquest into her death was told.
The inquest into the death of Cathy Hughes, aged 66, of Dun na Carraige, Blackrock, Salthill, Co Galway, and formerly of Westport, was opened this week. The full hearing was adjourned until a later date.
Ms Hughes passed away on July 20 this year at Old Head in Louisburgh. The sad passing of Ms Hughes stunned her homeplace and her adopted city of Galway where she was a leading light in art circles.
Dr Tamas Nemeth, Consultant Pathologist at Mayo University Hospital gave the medical cause of death as asphyxia due to drowning.
Coroner Pat O’Connor praised the efforts of the emergency services who tried but failed to resuscitate Ms Hughes. He said the talented artist was a “lovely lady” who “touched the lives of many.” “It’s a great tragedy,” said Mr O’Connor who sympathised with her family.
