A Mayo County councillor has said it is hugely positive that phase one of a proposed major Mayo greenway project has commenced and it can transform the entire county.
The first stage of the Westport-Castlebar-Ballina Inter-Urban Greenway officially commenced last Friday and Westport-based Fine Gael representative Peter Flynn said it is encouraging.

"This will link three key towns and a multitude of smaller towns here in Mayo," he said "One of the questions I asked about this initially was about whether there was anything else to compare it to, and to my surprise there wasn't and here in Mayo this is one of the first of its type in the country."
Cllr Flynn said he believes the proposed project can provide a tourism boost and be a big benefit to communities along the amenity.
"It can have a transformative impact on the county," he said. "What I love about it is I think in terms of tourism it will bring people here and for local people along the route it will give them the possibility of walking or cycling to work safely."
Cllr Flynn stated it is a hugely important and significant project for Mayo.
He said phase is not about exact route options and more about getting a broad overview of the area between the three towns so potential route options can be determined.
Cllr Flynn said one of the key goals of this route will be commute options to work, school, sports and shops so distance and accessibility will be significant factors.
