Killala junction branded 'accident waiting to happen'

Cllr Munnelly wants a new stop sign to be repainted at the junction.

A junction along a rural road near Killala has been described as an “accident waiting to happen” after resurfacing works covered up the stop line, prompting a local councillor to call for the road markings to be repainted.

Cllr Jarlath Munnelly raised his concerns at the October meeting of Ballina Municipal District, saying motorists were “driving right through” the junction without stopping.

The junction connects the L1107 Killala to Crossmolina road with the L1110 Kilfian road. Cllr Munnelly said concerned residents had reported a number of near misses to him. He also referred to a collision in which a jeep and trailer went through the junction and struck a car travelling in the opposite direction. He said the crash was bad but “could’ve been very serious”.

“I have been talking to local people, and there have been several incidents of people who don’t have the right of way driving right through that junction. We need to do something about that because it is an accident waiting to happen,” he said.

Mayo County Council's senior executive engineer Theresa Durkin said she had driven through the junction the previous day and understood the concerns raised.
