Keogh vows to fight for families impacted by defective concrete blocks scandal

Westport woman Keira Keogh is running for Fine Gael in the general election.
Mayo Fine Gael candidate Keira Keogh has voiced deep concern for homeowners affected by defective concrete blocks. Her recent visit to a home in Pairc na Coille in Westport, along with a "shocking experience" in a North Mayo village, allowed her to witness first hand the severe damage to crumbling homes.
“I was genuinely speechless,” Ms Keogh stated, describing the sight of homes in Carrowteige impacted by this devastating crisis. “The toll on homeowners, the financial strain, and the emotional weight on families are immense. Each home tells a story of resilience and heartbreak.”
There is a nearly deserted social housing estate in Carrowteige with only two houses remaining occupied. It really highlights the devastation caused by these defective blocks.
Ms Keogh said she is delighted that Fine Gael has included a total review of the scheme in its programme for government. She believes the scheme requires much more flexibility to meet the needs of affected homeowners fully.
“Some homes need foundational replacements, while older residents may prefer the option to sell their property under the scheme rather than go through a lengthy rebuild,” she explained. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all solution.”
If elected, Ms Keogh is committed to working toward a scheme that reflects these varied needs.
“I am dedicated to ensuring that this programme is adjusted to provide each homeowner the flexibility and support they deserve. This issue requires not just policy, but also understanding and compassion.”
