Investigation into Mayo teen's death ongoing
The late Vakaris Guidaitis.
A garda investigation into the death of a 17-year-old boy is continuing, an inquest has heard.
Vakaris Guidaitis, of Tavraun, Kilkelly, died on March 30 this year after he was struck by a vehicle while walking along the N17 at Barnacarroll, Claremorris.
An inquest into his death was opened this week but has been adjourned until a later date until a Garda investigation is completed.
Dr Tamas Nemeth, Consultant Pathologist at Mayo University Hospital told the inquest that the medical cause of death was “serious brain injuries due to involvement in a road traffic accident".
A former pupil of St Colman’s College in Claremorris, Vakaris had been working as a labourer before he lost his life.
Coroner Pat O’Connor sympathised with the family and adjourned the full hearing of the inquest until a later date.
Citing the location of the collision, Mr O’Connor stated this was “yet another unfortunate incident on that road.”
Vakaris is among 14 people who have lost their lives on Mayo roads already this year. There were 12 fatalities in the whole of 2023.
