Illegal dumping at Mayo clothes banks 'is attracting rodents'

The problem has been highlighted in Ballyhaunis.

Illegal dumping at clothes banks is "a total scourge" and must be addressed, a Mayo councillor has stated.

Fine Gael Cllr Alma Gallagher raised the matter at last week's meeting of Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District, noting that clothes banks in Ballyhaunis and Knock are attracting rodents because people are dumping their household waste at the facilities.

The Ballyhaunis-based councillor said she was aware that Dublin City Council had invested additional resources in working with waste companies to use Eircodes to see how people were disposing of waste, adding: “I am not saying this as a fear factor but just to see how people are disposing of their waste, because it is disgusting what is up there.”

She also wanted to know where the council was in terms of providing CCTV at the sites, saying: “I know GDPR is an issue, so that is why we need an update on the steering committee, to oversee the role of CCTV and have the power to hand out fines.”

Head of the district Padraig Flanagan told Cllr Gallagher that a CCTV committee is not yet established in Mayo.

"I have highlighted the urgency of this because of the bring-bank issues. There is funding for daily cleaning that we have to do but this is not the solution. We have to keep the pressure on for this committee to be set up," he added.
