It will be a day to remember in the North Mayo village of Lahardane tomorrow (Wednesday) when a new GP begins operation.

The local community fought an impressive battle to retain its GP service after attempts were made to amalgamate it with the nearby town of Crossmolina. The GP took up residence in Lahardane last Thursday, February 1, and was in attendance at Addergoole Medical Centre on Thursday and Friday to facilitate applications for patients wishing to transfer back to Lahardane.

Fine Gael TD Michael Ring said the reinstatement of a GP service in Lahardane was "a testament to the spirit demonstrated by this wonderful community".

"William Barrett and the whole community worked hard to ensure that a GP service would be restored to Lahardane.

“Every single day since October 1st, 2023, the door was opened in this surgery by the local people who promised to stay there until a GP was appointed.

“I have been involved with this community since the beginning and I can only commend everyone for the campaign they ran.

“I again wish to compliment Gerry Loftus on instigating this campaign and dedicating so much time and energy to it too. I also want to thank the HSE for working with the local community to bring this to a successful conclusion.

“People power and working with local representatives works so well when everyone comes together.

“I am delighted for the community of Lahardane and surrounding areas that they will once again have a fully operational G.P. Service. People will be able to access medical services in their locality. I know this matter caused immense stress and worry and I am very pleased that a successful outcome was reached in this matter” concluded Deputy Michael Ring.

Mayo TD, Alan Dillon also paid tribute to the local community.

“The fact that a resolution to this ongoing issue has been found is a testament to the local community who worked tirelessly to ensure that a GP service would be retained in Lahardane.

"They lobbied local TDs and councillors and held a very positive public meeting which I attended and addressed. We also held a meeting with the Community HealthCare Organisation of the HSE, and following much engagements, a proper resolution was found.

“This campaign showed how local communities can work with Government TDs and public representatives to find a positive solution that meets the needs of the local community in Lahardane and the surrounding communities. They were determined not to lose this vital service and I am pleased that they have got a successful conclusion.”
