HSE gives update on long-delayed Mayo health project

The HSE has provided detailed operational plans for the new Ballyhaunis Primary Care Centre and has also committed to it being opened by the end of the year.

Responding to a series of questions from Cllr Alma Gallagher at the September meeting of Regional Health Forum West and North West, the HSE said the project is currently nearing “practical completion with minor works such as painting and external parking/signage ongoing". Completion of building works is due at the end of this month. 

"Once practical completion is agreed, the building is handed over to the HSE for equipment fit out. Equipping is currently being coordinated. Lead times from equipment suppliers vary but may be up to 12 weeks. Service commencement will be dependent on equipment delivery; it will be possible to commence services on a phased basis as specific areas are fitted out.” 

The centre will provide a range of services, including GP care, public health nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, dental services, community medicine, social work, immunisation services, child and family psychology, dietetics, podiatry and integrated care.

In terms of staffing, it was confirmed that the new facility will accommodate some services, including staff currently based in Ballyhaunis Health Centre and some services currently provided by Claremorris Primary Care Centre. This will enable services such as speech and language therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dental, and public health nursing to be delivered locally and closer to the patient.

In total, approximately 12-14 staff are expected to be based in the centre including four nursing staff and one dedicated staff member in each of occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech and language therapy.

In relation to costs, the HSE said: “There is no additional cost to the HSE due to the overrun on delivery of this facility. HSE is leasing the centre from the developer; rental rates and service charges have not changed in this time. Equipping costs are not fully known at this stage as this is currently being coordinated.” 

Cllr Gallagher welcomed the information and particularly the commitment to have the centre being completed before Christmas, but she sought a precise opening date, given the many delays in the project over the past five years.

Integrated Health Area Manager for Mayo, Mary Warde, replied: “I am confident the doors will open in 2026, that is our understanding.”
