Action needs to be taken, says one Mayo councillor
Graffiti ruining Croagh Patrick sign

Andre Warde and Ben Lyster, Sixth Year, representing Coláiste Chiaráin, hold the school flag at the summit of Croagh Patrick during their trip on Thursday, September 14th.

A Mayo councillor says action needs to be taken to prevent graffiti on an iconic sign at the summit of Croagh Patrick.

Cllr Ger Deere told a meeting of Mayo County Council that the sign is being destroyed by climbers who are scrawling messages and images following their ascent.

"It might seem like a trivial thing but images of that sign are beamed all over the world," said the Fine Gael councillor.

He said the sign needs to be replaced or cleaned up and suggested that a sign be placed at the bottom of the peak instructing people that graffiti is banned.
