Last Friday, as expected, Taoiseach Simon Harris called the election to be held on Friday, November 29.

16 candidates have declared in the Mayo constituency, in which there are five seats available, ahead of the close of nominations this Saturday.

Fine Gael have four candidates running in Mayo – Alan Dillon, Mark Duffy, Martina Jennings and Keira Keogh while Fianna Fáil have opted for a two-candidate strategy, which will see Dara Calleary and Lisa Chambers in the running again for the party.

Sinn Féin will run with two candidates, Gerry Murray and Rose Conway-Walsh. Aontú have put forward Paul Lawless and Independent Ireland have chosen Chris Maxwell. Mícheál “Boxty” Ó Conaill is the Green Party candidate while People Before Profit’s candidate is Joe Daly.

Four Independent candidates are in the running – Patsy O’Brien, Stephen Kerr, Gerry Loftus and Sean Forkin.

The latest time the Returning Officer for Mayo, Ann Marie Courell, can receive nomination papers is by 12 noon this Saturday, November 16.
